UPCOMING TALKS

I'm honoured to have been invited to speak at the following large gatherings of professionals dedicated to advancing education and work in Canada.

More to come for sure. The industry is responding with excitement to Job Talks  with promotion having just begun.

PRESENTATION TO THE CONSTRUCTION TRADES EXPLORATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE

It was a privilege to be invited to address the Construction Trades Exploration Advisory Committee (CTEP) at their annual meeting this week. Sponsored by the TMG Builders and the Toronto District School Board, coordinated by Mr. Elvy Moro, and hosted at Northview Heights Secondary School, the event featured incredible success stories of its young, driven, and enthusiastic program candidates. We also learned that the CTEP program will be expanding and I'm looking forward to being part of its future growth in any way I can.

PRESENTATION TO CONFERENCE BOARD OF CANADA NATIONAL SUMMIT

It was a pleasure to debut a New View of Working Canadians at the The Conference Board of CanadaSkills and PSE National Summit last week. To view the segments and subscribe to updates, visit www.jobtalks.ca

THE FUTURE OF SENIOR DISCOUNTS

On November 22, 2017 I joined Wanda Morris, VP of Advocacy for CARP on Libby Znaimer's radio show "Fight Back with Libby Znaimer" to discuss the future of senior discounts. The City of Kingston is considering getting rid of them. Click HERE to listen.

SPEECH TO TORONTO CITY COUNCIL

On November 2nd, I delivered a speech to Toronto City Council as a candidate for the Ward 28 Interim Councillor appointment. Although I drew the unenviable speaking position of second last, I was one of five (of 31) candidates to receive a vote on the first ballot. Click HERE to watch.

PIECE IN THE GLOBE AND MAIL

My reflection on our trip to North Korea was printed in The Globe and Mail's October 14, 2017 weekend edition.  They even included Irina's photography in the full page piece. Husband-Wife publishing duo -- would never have imagined that.
The online version can be read HERE.

JOBTALKS.ORG - TEASER

Proud to release this teaser for JobTalks.org, my SSHRC-funded research project aimed at improving the way students, parents, and educators look at the Skilled Trades. I have an outstanding team in videographer Ahmed Said and Research Assistant Benjamin Millard, with great help from Maryl Eva

In a few weeks, we'll be releasing 10 videos of tradespeople who are passionate about their jobs in a variety of fields. In the months that follow, dozens more interviews will be uploaded to our Youtube channel. In Spring 2018, a new Job Talks website will be launched, capable of matching individuals to particular trades based on their underlying values, goals, emotions, and personality. Once matched to a particular trade, visitors can then connect with various education and employment pathways in their respective trades. If you have an interest in our project, please reach out through the project's Contact page.

GBC APPLIED RESEARCH DAY

I had the pleasure of joining fellow researchers and research supporters at the Office of Research & Innovation's 2017 Applied Research Day. The Office truly knows how to celebrate its researchers and partners and to cultivate industry relationships. It was an uplifting event and showcase, where I had the opportunity to provide the latest update on Job Talks. In the bottom right is Research Assistant Benjamin Millard giving a sneak-peek of our initial video series. The overall event was a hit!

PANEL TALK - SOCIAL ISOLATION

I recently participated in a panel discussion on social isolation with  other experts on The Zoomer, hosted by Marissa Semkiw. The show aired nationally on VisionTV. In Canada, one in five people say they don't participate regularly in any social activity. StatsCan estimates that more than 30% of Canadian seniors are at high risk of isolation. I brought a comparative perspective to the discussion (Millennials vs. Zoomers) and warned about Millennials' relative comfort with being alone in the Digital Age and why this may be concerning for the future. GBC NEWS PROFILE

I was featured in the February 2017 edition of George Brown News. It was very nice of the college to publish this interview. I gave the most thought to the question in the top-right corner. It's always rewarding when a student who "gets it" ends up getting the job they wanted.
